Dermal Fillers

Wrinkles and volume loss, although a natural part of ageing, remains a concern for many. Dermal fillers seek to restore, revive and rejuvenate the face by adding volume, plumping out fine lines, hydrating and balancing. Injected under the skin at different levels and throughout most areas of the face, dermal fillers enhance and provide a subtle lift to aging skin. From sagging contours to reshaping of the lips, facial aesthetic concerns can be addressed allowing you to be your most beautiful self.

What are the different types of dermal fillers?

Several types of dermal fillers exist for different desired outcomes, and determining the right volumes and type sets us apart. We only use reputable fillers of the highest quality and primarily stock hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers Juvederm and Restylane. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin with its core function being the attraction of water molecules and thus expansion. Our choice for this selection of dermal filler is two fold; mimicking what is already present in the skin as well as being easily dissolved with the enzyme hyaluroidase. Any complications or unwanted effects can be reversed through the injection of this enzyme. Hydrating, plumping and natural restoration is what we seek with dermal fillers at Alpha Aesthetics.

Who should consider dermal fillers?

There is no ideal candidate or specific ideal age for dermal fillers as a variety of fillers can be used to treat a variety of concerns. Whilst dermal fillers are used to treat signs of aging, they can also be used by younger patients seeking facial contouring or lip enhancement.

What about downtime?

There is generally no downtime for dermal fillers however there is always the risk of bruising and swelling upon the injection site. Lip fillers are more notorious for swelling so this is important to consider and keep in mind when you book your appointment. Anti-inflammatory medications and ice can help with any swelling and bruising. We also recommend you not to use any makeup products for 24 hours after treatment.

How do I prepare for dermal fillers?

Before booking your appointment it is recommended you check your events calendar so as to take this into consideration in case you experience any swelling or bruising. We also recommend you to book your dermal fillers two weeks either side away from any dental work. As the effects of Covid-19 are not yet well understood, we recommend not having fillers within 6 weeks of a Covid diagnosis or a Covid vaccination. In order to reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising we recommend the use of blood thinning medications, ranging from anti-coagulants to omega 3’s to anti inflammatory medications be avoided prior to your appointment. If you have an autoimmune condition and have had a recent inflammatory flare, we recommend waiting 2-4 weeks before having dermal fillers.

Are there any unwanted side effects to dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are generally considered safe, however, as with any injectable, there are some risks. The primary reason injectables should always be done by a doctor in a medical practice is the risk of an allergic reaction. Common side effects include bruising and swelling, which should heal fairly quickly and can be treated therapeutically with ice and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen. Injections into blood vessels can also lead to supply issues to various tissues, however this is a rare complication. Being treated by an experienced and qualified doctor means any adverse effects can be acted upon and resolved quickly.

How long do dermal fillers last for?

Depending on the areas injected and the type of filler used, dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6-24 months. The longevity of fillers are dependent on several exogenous factors such as exercise, metabolism and sun exposure.
